Italian Plum Crisp

Prunes – The quintessential food for the geriatric set.  Not exactly what you might reach for when making a dessert, especially in this apple-obsessed season (myself included).  However, a recent trip to the grocery and the misreading of a label resulted in me acquiring about 30 of these little purple gems.  A quick web search informed me that my plums were prune plums – only fresh, not dried.  Not sure what to do with these tart little fruits, I looked up some recipes, spliced them together and came up with Italian Prune Plum Crisp.

The sourness of the plums is mellowed by the sweet and crunchy topping – and made even better with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!

Italian Plum Crisp

25- 30 sliced Italian plums
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. vanilla extract
3/4 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. whole wheat flour
1 stick of butter (room temperature)

Mix plums with lemon juice and sugar and pour into a buttered 9″ baking pan.  Combine flour, brown sugar, vanilla extract and butter until coarse. Sprinkle crumbles over plums. Bake at 375 degrees for 45 minutes to 1 hour until plums are tender and topping is lightly browned. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
